SOUTH AMBOY – At the 8/7/13 Council Business Meeting, there was an extensive discussion about the safety of the Waterfront Walkway.
City Engineer Mark Rasimowicz announced that bidding on the project would begin Aug. 22, but it was the current state of the area that was the topic of discussion.
Despite the fences and barricades that were put up at the walkway after Hurricane Sandy tore through the area, local residents continue to walk on the unstable path at all hours of the day.
Councilman Applegate wanted to know what was being done about the fences being knocked down and warned that residents would be hurt if the council continued to do nothing about the area.
He suggested that trespassing signs be added to the area or the fences be chained down so people couldn’t get by them. Business Administrator Camille Tooker said she and Rasimowicz would look into alternatives to keep residents from using the walkway before construction begins.
The bond ordinance for the Waterfront Walkway will be discussed at the city’s next council meeting on Aug. 21.
