This is an explanation of some recent proposals.
The purpose of firearm registration is not just to allow a future confiscation, but to allow a regressive tax on owners or firearms.
The idea of banning the so-called “gun show loophole” is to reduce the value of firearms. If they can’t be sold their value drops to scrap metal. This allows confiscation by paying pennies per pound in the future (“fair market value”). What other consumer product is banned from resale?
After the proposed Federal Background Check Law was justly defeated, the media admitted it would not have prevented that school shooting in Connecticut. (No one talked about the shooter’s medical treatments.) In the case of the movie theater shooting in Colorado, the shooting of a Congresswoman in Arizona, or the shooting in Fort Hood, all the alleged shooters had passed a background check.
