COMMUNITY VOICE: Leave Politics Out Of It

I am a student attending the AUL Charter High School in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. As an AULCHS student, I found the reasons for Leslie Dominguez-Rodriguez’s refusal to vote to be more of a politically motivated slight against my school than a safety problem as she claimed.

Dominguez-Rodriguez claimed that our use of the rectory was not safe because it would cause too much congestion on Hall Avenue and that we should look for other locations, particularly outside of the city. I have attended AUL for three years, and that section of Hall Avenue has never posed a safety issue for me, a student that travels to school on foot.

I also attended middle school at S.E. Shull school which is located on the same street, and have never had a problem with safety. Because my school encourages its students to participate in the activities offered at the Perth Amboy High School, I am in the marching band.

When I have to travel to PAHS for band practices after school, I have much difficulty navigating Eagle Avenue directly in front of the school. There have been multiple times when I have nearly been hit by a car, or have witnessed another student nearly hit by a car. With this knowledge, I feel it unfair that my school, which has achieved so much in the three years of its existence, be penalized for a problem that does not exist near it.

Sincerely,
Kianna Middleton
