It Was Such A Gorgeous Weekend . . . And Then I Remembered

Saturday, September 7th and Sunday, September 8th were gorgeous days.During the day, the sun was out, skies were blue and barely a cloud was in the sky. This weekend was perfect for outdoor activities and there was an abundance of them.

Perth Amboy had their Annual Youth Fishing Derby held on the Waterfront (giving further proof of that area’s rebound.) City Hall Circle was dotted with antique, vintage and classic cars for the UEZ Annual Car Show.

Some parking lots and side streets were filled with activity. Events included fund-raisers, church events and celebrating the achievements of young people.

There was a religious ground-breaking ceremony on Sunday outside of St. Demetrios Church celebrating the soon to be installation of an elevator to aid the disabled.

I decided to fix myself a small container of ice cream sprinkled with coconut, chocolate syrup and small marshmallows. I went to Bayview Park and sat there enjoying my dessert and the activities on the Waterfront.

By activities, I mean watching others and enjoy the Waterfront and watching the boats and ships go by.

For some reason, I received the most pleasure out of watching families and couples that have been married a long time taking advantage of the spectacular weather.

One long married couple in particular caught my eye. When they walked, they were not only synchronized, but they also held their hands in the same position. (Clasped behind their backs.) There is an old saying that pets resemble their owners. I guess if you stay married long enough, you may start to resemble each other.

As I was walking back home, my thoughts turned to how beautiful the weather was on September 11, 2001. In such a short period of time, what began so beautifully, turned into something so ugly and unimaginable.

When the first plane hit, the Twin Towers most people probably thought it was an accident. There was no mistake as to what was happening when that second plane hit.

Some people think that this day should just be forgotten. Just tell that those who lost a loved one. There may be a few that lost someone that fateful day and feel that should move on and some have.

It is that individual’s decision as to how they want to remember that day.

I, personally did not know anyone who died or was injured on 9-11-01. With the instant technology we had that day, it was almost as if you were there minus inhaling the dangerous chemicals, smoke, and being covered in soot. The devastation experienced by those who were at the Towers and surrounding neighborhoods was unimaginable. I don’t know how anyone there could ever get over it.

Sayreville paid tribute to those who perished on 9-11 on this past Sunday. Perth Amboy will be paying tribute on Wednesday, 9/11/13 at 12 noon, City Hall Circle. The Woodbridge service will also be on the same day at 6 p.m. in their City Hall parking lot.

I remember going outside and saying to myself, “What a beautiful day!” on that morning of 9-11-01. To this day, every beautiful day in early September reminds me of that beautiful day that turned into the tragedy of 9-11-01. We’ll never forget.
