SAYREVILLE – It has been 12 years since that tragic day in 2001 when America was attacked by terrorists. The Borough of Sayreville will never forget that day and the people from the community who perished in the attack. At the memorial ceremony on Sunday the town remembered Robert Hughes, Judy Hazel S. Fernandez, Donna Marie Giordano and Vinod Parakat.
Master of Ceremonies, Kenneth Kelly, the organizer of the memorial did a fantastic job as always. Each year he and his team put together a beautiful program to honor the residents of Sayreville who were lost that day. Each year the ceremony draws together about 500 residents, family and friends to the memorial site at Burke’s Park on Washington Road.
The program included Guest Speaker, Sayreville Chief of Police, John Zebrowski and various speakers including family members, Mayor Kennedy O’Brien, Congressman Frank Pallone, Assemblymen John Wisniewski and Craig Coughlin. The Sayreville Girl Scouts did a flower presentation. Wreaths were presented by the Police, Fire and EMT departments. Vocalist Judith Gary sang “Love Can Build a Bridge” and “God Bless America.” The memorial ended with Billy Magee on the bagpipes.
