Perth Amboy: Varela Retains Seat, Newcomer Bermudez & Lebreault Rebounds

South Amboy: Kevin S. Riley Winner, Plus Two Write-ins

PERTH AMBOY & SOUTH- AMBOY – In Perth Amboy, Sam Lebreault and Israel Varela scored more than a victory in the Nov. 5 School Board Election.

A few days after the election, Suspended Superintendent Dr. Janine Walker-Caffrey was dealt another blow when the state refused to reinstate her.

Varela and Lebreault had many ethics charges filed against them by Caffrey. The voters made the final decision. Varela was the top vote getter followed by another vocal critic of Caffrey, Anthony Bermudez. Although Lebreault was defeated when he ran for reelection in November 2012 he came roaring back convincingly this time.

Lebreault consistently attended and spoke out at School Board Meetings even after he lost his seat last year.

There were a total of 10,000 voters in the election.

Meanwhile in South Amboy, they are still having trouble with not enough candidates running for office to fill the School Board positions.

This problem has existed for many years in South Amboy which has a population of 8,721 in a 2,693 sq. mile area.

Kevin S. Riley was the top vote-getter with 918 votes. There were 299 write-in votes. When the Amboy Guardian looked at the Middlesex County Board of Elections Website on November 11, the two top write-in winners names were not posted.
