PERTH AMBOY – Perth Amboy has many men and woman proudly serving our beloved country in the Armed Forces today and in the past. This week another one of our young residents departs again this time heading to Seoul, South Korea for the next two years.
Marine Sergeant Joshua Hedberg of Water Street will be deployed to United States Army Garrison Yongsan for his next assignment. As a Communications Marine he will be one of the men directly overseeing the security of the military networks running throughout the Pacific theater.
Joshua has spent the past five years stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he deployed with 1st Battalion 10th Marines to Afghanistan in October 2010. He has been awarded the Navy and Marine
Corps Achievement Medal twice. Joshua followed his older brother, Corporal Stephen Hedberg into the service back in 2008 and also served alongside their brother-in-law Corporal Timothy Ries while at Camp Lejeune. His grandfather, the late Rev. Winston P. Hedberg had served in the Korean War as an army chaplain.
During his tenure with the Marines, Sergeant Hedberg contributed more than 100 hours to the Single Marine Program for single Marines living on base. While in California for training, he volunteered at the Baja Dog Rescue helping set up puppy adoptions. In support of Special Olympics, Hedberg participated in the Polar Plunge. He was also involved in several Wounded Warrior runs, proctored tests at a middle school and volunteered in the Exceptional Family Member Program for kids of Marines with special needs. Sergeant Hedberg is the son of Daniel and Pamela Hedberg, brother of Corporal Stephen Hedberg and Rachel Hedberg Ries and her husband Tim and the uncle of Makayla Hedberg. His grandparents are Mrs. Waltraud Hedberg of Pittsburgh and Mr. and Mrs. George Clay of Niles, Ohio.
