What’s Going on With Vopak Industries?

vopakPERTH AMBOY – Former Councilman Fernando Gonzalez questioned the Council about Vopak Industries. Gonzalez said that he heard a rumor that Vopak is no longer in the picture as far as developing in Perth Amboy.

City Attorney Mark Blunda said, “Vopak is not going away. The original plan for the site in Perth Amboy may change. They had concerns after Superstorm Sandy. Cleanup is still going on by Vopak, but now Vopak and Hess are in talks. They have renegotiate with Hess what they are planning to do with the property.”

In the 7/11/12 Amboy Guardian, there was news release stating, “Perth Amboy is proud that one of Vopak’s recent acquisitions is in their city. Having purchased the former, long dormant Hess site, Vopak plans to construct a completely new, much expanded state of the art facility. Demolition of the aging buildings and tanks is underway and reconstruction is scheduled to begin later this year. (2012)”

From the City of Perth Amboy’s website: Vopak, the world’s leading independent provider of bulk liquid storage facilities, and their joint venture partner, Tanco Terminals, a terminaling company owned by the Middendorf families, has purchased the former Hess State Street Terminal in northern Perth Amboy, N.J. The venture, Vopak Terminal Perth Amboy, is in the process of defining its development plans for the use of this mothballed site as an independent third party storage facility for petroleum and biofuel products.
