O’Connell to Challenge?
– SOUTH AMBOY – Middlesex County Clerk Elaine Flynn officially declared incumbent Mayor Fred Henry as the officially winner of the Democratic Mayoral Primary held June 4, 2014. This was declared after the provisional, mail-in and machine totals were all tabulated.
John O’Connell, who had the backing of the South Amboy Democratic Party expects to challenge the election results. Totals were as follows: Henry 580 votes and O’Connell: 577 votes.
Henry ran for Mayor in 2010 and was backed by the South Amboy Democratic Party. Other candidates included Independents: Mary O’Connor, Vincent Mackiel and John Dragotta. Mary O’Connor came in second by twelve votes. Some of those ballots were challenged before it was finally determined that Henry won by one vote.
O’Connell has until Wednesday, June 18, 2014 to file papers to request a recount of all of the votes.
As it stands, Henry will run unopposed in November since there are no other candidates running for Mayor.
