Raritan Yacht Club Dedicates Regatta as Fundraiser for WeCare-Perth Amboy Coalition of Food Pantries
News Release – June 19, 2014 –
PERTH AMBOY – The Red Grant Regatta, held annually in Perth Amboy, has been one of the highpoints of competitive sailing in the New York New Jersey area for 68 years. This year, the Red Grant Regatta will occur July 11-13, 2014 and once again the Club will sponsor a charity fundraiser during the regatta. The 2014 charity will be WECARE-Perth Amboy Coalition of Food Pantries.
The first day of the regatta, Friday, July 11, will highlight fundraising for WECARE-Perth Amboy Coalition of Food Pantries. WECARE comprises seven food pantries and two soup kitchens. In 2013, Mercy House in Perth Amboy alone fed 6785 adults and 3626 children. These statistics underline the urgency of need for all foodd pantries and soup kitchens.
The Red Grant Regatta began to honor Adolph “Red” Grant, a Perth Amboy yacht racer and veteran who lost his life in World War II at a very young age. This annual event is a major part of Raritan Yacht Club’s 149-year history in Perth Amboy. The regatta has grown to become one of the premier regattas in the Metropolitan area.
The 100 plus boats expected to compete in the sailboat racing July 11-13, 2014 on Raritan Bay, travel from New York, southern New Jersey and other yacht clubs on the bay to attend this prestigious event. Friday events include junior racing and will highlight small sailboats and approximately 75 junior competitor sailors. On Saturday and Sunday, the large PHRF boats and one-design boats will race. Saturday is also the day when the Mayor’s Cup race for cruising sailboats will take place. The Mayor’s Cup race has become a very popular event and Mayor Diaz, Honorary Chairperson of the Red Grant Regatta, will be on hand to present the award.
The Red Grant Regatta is open to all sailors who are current members of US Sailing. Information is available on the Raritan Yacht Club website: www.ryc.org.
Raritan Yacht Club was established in 1865 and is 149 years old this year. The Club is looking forward to celebrating its 150th birthday and 69th Red Grant Regatta in 2015.
