PERTH AMBOY – The fire department was dispatched at 3:09 p.m. to 227 Brighton Avenue for a reported fire spotted by a police officer working a traffic detail. Upon arrival an extremely heavy smoke condition was coming from the attic and the eaves. Crews made an attempt to extinguish the fire but were met with heavy fire conditions. A search was conducted of the building and the building was determined to be empty. At that time crews were ordered out of the building and the fire was fought from the outside using two ladder trucks and hand lines in order to contain the fire and to prevent spread to the adjoining properties. The fire was brought under control within an hour. Eventually crews were able to go back in and make final extinguishment from the inside. 8 members of a family were displaced and were assisted by the Red Cross. Mutual aid was brought in to assist with manpower and to help cover the City, those departments were from Fords, Keasbey, Hopelawn, South Amboy, Sayreville, Woodbridge. The fire originated in the attic area but the cause was undetermined. This is the second house fire on Brighton Ave within a week.
