The Y is “Gearing for School” with the
Support of the Hyundai Motor America Eastern Region
Press Release 7/20/17
PERTH AMBOY – The RARITAN BAY AREA YMCA and Hyundai Motor America Eastern Region have partnered once again to support students who participate in the Y’s Building Beyond Barriers Program (B3) a project funded by the NJDOE’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers. Hyundai Motor America Eastern Region has invested in the Perth Amboy community by providing 150 Perth Amboy Public Schools students with backpacks and school supplies to help prepare students for the upcoming school year. A new school year means a fresh start—a chance to develop and grow as fruitful routines, possibilities and interests emerge. As children transition from summer to fall, the partnership between Y and Hyundai Motor America Eastern Region helps students prepare for the 2017-2018 school year. The Y anticipates that the school supplies provided by Hyundai Motor America Eastern Region will help students, and their families, by minimizing any barriers in attaining fundamental school supplies that some families may have difficulties in securing.
The B3 Summer Program is a Project–Based Learning summer camp that provides 150 students from 5th to 9th grade with opportunities to engage in career readiness practices. Through this 4-week program, students work in teams to develop weekly projects while participating in classes such as Art, Culinary, Technology, and Film. Each week teams are provided a theme they must adhere to and are assigned a facilitator that assists them in developing a project and presentation. At the end of the week judges from various sectors from the community are brought in to score the projects and the presentations using a career readiness practices centered scoring rubric.
The RARITAN BAY AREA YMCA and Hyundai Motor America Eastern Region will present the school supplies to students at the final student showcase of the summer program on 7/28/17 at McGinnis Middle School. “Adequate school supplies are essential in meeting the most basic needs of any student, we know that through this partnership our students will start the school year prepared to succeed,” said Steve Jobin, President & CEO, RARITAN BAY AREA YMCA. “We offer youth the opportunity to get additional learning and support through our programs, as well as participate in meaningful activities that can inspire their motivations and abilities to succeed.”
