9 Commerce Lane Preserving the Thomas Peterson House Site
PERTH AMBOY – Perth Amboy is proud of having been home to Thomas Mundy Peterson when he cast his historic vote on March 31, 1870, the first vote cast by an African-American after the passage of the 15th Amendment. Now we know where his home once stood! The house is long gone, and the property slated to become a parking lot. Since there had only been minor later construction, it’s possible that an archaeological investigation may still turn up artifacts from Peterson and his family. Historian and author Gordon Bond will be discussing his research and hopes for taking advantage of this important opportunity.
The lecture takes place on Friday, March 23, 7 p.m. at the Perth Amboy Free Public Library, 196 Jefferson Street, Perth Amboy, NJ. Refreshments will be served. For more information, please call 732-826-2600.
