“I do nothing every day, but it always leads to something”
Winnie the Pooh, from the live action version of “The Lovable Adventures of Christopher Robin” is where his stuffed animals come to us for a sweet gentle story about growing up and knowing what’s important in life. This film tells the tale of what happened to Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) once he left the 100-acre woods he grew up in after going to school and serving his country in the army during World War II. Chris meets a beautiful woman, Evelyn (Hayley Atwell) and marries her, and has a daughter, Madeline (Bronte Carmichael). He puts his adventures of Winnie the Pooh and friends behind him. Now, he’s an efficiency expert at a luggage company. The higher-ups want to make cutbacks because business is slow, and they think that is the only way to save their business. Christopher Robin’s wife, Evelyn decides to take their daughter, Madeline to the country without Christopher because he has to work.
Meanwhile, Winnie the Pooh can’t find his friends on a foggy day, so he journeys to London through a magical door and finds Christopher Robin all grown up. Pooh asks Christopher to find his friends. Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh go to Sussex, then to the Hundred Acre Woods and find everyone and reunites them.
Christopher Robin returns to London, but Tigger had lost Christopher Robin’s important efficiency papers, so Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet journey back to Sussex with Madeline in order to find Christopher Robin and return his papers.
“Christopher Robin” is absolutely a wonderful fun adventure which is sweet and gentle and captures the magic of the Hundred Acre Woods. Ewan McGregor plays Christopher Robin perfectly and is really suited to his part. He’s a great actor and can play just about anything. There is an outstanding voice cast. The film has life lessons for all ages.
It should be noted that the stuffed animals look so realistic and like they’ve been played with, along with the Post-World War II setting in England. Kudos to the CGI team as well as the actors who voiced the characters, including Jim Cummings who voiced Winnie-the-Pooh and Tigger and Peter Capaldi who voiced Rabbit.
For those interested, there’s another film: “Goodbye Christopher Robin” about A.A. Milne who wrote Winnie-the-Pooh and based the character Christopher Robin after his son, Christopher Robin Milne.
