PERTH AMBOY – Student Representatives Kevin Chavez and Jadelyn Cardenales both spoke about how pleased they were with how the high school looked as soon as they walked into the entrance. Jadelyn spoke first and stated she was surprised in the best way possible. “I was nervous, but everyone was great. I love the laptops. The updated Media Center was exciting.”

When Kevin came up to speak, he echoed the same sentiments, plus he added the main office was very vibrant and the secretaries seemed very happy. “We can wear our panther uniforms every day. The laptops mean we are responsible. I’m excited to be a senior, but also sad I will be leaving (graduating this year).

After the students spoke, there was a motion to go into executive session. But before doing so, Board Member Junior Iglesia said, “The public needs more information on what we will be discussing in closed session.”

Board Member Tashee Vasquez asked the Board Attorney Isabel Machado if she could draw up a draft regarding this.

Board President Ken Puccio said, “Going into closed session, we can be discussing something very confidential in nature.”

Board Member Obi Gonzalez then suggested that this could be discussed as New Business.

The Closed Session was called at 5:43 p.m. and the Board returned at 7:22 p.m.

During the Board Meeting, when Board President Ken Puccio made his report, he requested a moment of silence to remember those who perished in 9-11-01. “A lot of people forgot about this. Our Vice President Milady Tejeda was in the South Tower that day.”

Superintendent Dr. David Roman then spoke, “I am happy to report that we had a very successful school opening thanks to the staff. I had a meeting with the Leadership Team who are dedicated to help students fulfill their dreams. The Freshman Academy on Seaman Street is due to open February 2019. The Health & Science Academy is due to open in two weeks. We’re dedicated to providing an opportunity to help students succeed and contribute to society. Change has to happen in all positions in May and June.”

Board Member Lissett Lebron had a question about approval for a Dual Language School to conduct an Afterschool Supplemental Tutoring Program under the supervision of Dr. Jose Santos and also for approval for the James J. Flynn School to conduct a Before and After School Enrichment and Supplemental Tutoring Program. Lebron asked if the similar programs will be offered to all schools.

Dr. Vivian Rodriguez replied, “Others were already approved previously (in other schools).”

Ms. McAdam had shown a slide presentation which was a self-assessment for determining grades under the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act. She responded to a question on of the Board Members asked in regards of what activities will take place this year addressing bullying. McAdam said, “In October, there will be a “Week of Respect” Presentation done in an assembly. We will have responses in classrooms in how we should relate to one another. The staff will look at conflict resolutions and we will be dealing on lessons on anti-bullying.”

Tashee Vasquez told the parents in attendance that there are a lot of revised policies that will be on the website.

During the New Business, it was discussed that for the executive session, the Board Attorney will come back with proposed language on what information they can tell those in attendance as to what information can be given to the public before the Board goes into closed session.

Junior Iglesia asked for an update on the new high school.

Board Secretary Derek Jess responded, “There’s no ground-breaking, yet. We have to look at the education specifics for the building design and advertise for bids. After the designs and constructions are met, we’ll have to interview those who put in a bid and score them. The construction was pushed back because of contaminated soil. We’re looking at maybe 2023. Whenever a new school is being constructed, there always is additional time built in.”

Board Member Lissett Lebron encouraged the parents to meet with their children’s teachers, the administrators, and all staff involved in your child’s education.

Tashee Vasquez said, “The Board of Education is working with the administration and OEM for any weather-related emergencies. Keep the people of North Carolina in your prayers.”

Board Vice President Milady Tejeda thanked all who came to the Convocation at the beginning of the school year. “I’m very proud of the district.”

Board President Ken Puccio remarked that the football team had an impressive opening win. He urged all to cheer on all of our sports teams.

During the public portion, Dr. Walden from the Jewish Renaissance invited the Board Members to come to an office in the High School that has an inspiration chalk board wall. Students can come in and write inspirational thoughts. She also mentioned that Suicide Prevention Month is September.

Earlier in the Meeting there was a slideshow presentation by Board Attorney Isabel Machado, which were the Do’s and Don’ts for Board Members. The Do’s: advice to Board Members regarding keeping the community informed on the progress and needs of the district. At the meetings, consider recommendations of the Superintendent and refer all complaints to the Superintendent. Board Members should follow Board Policy. Decisions that are made should support the educational welfare of all children. The Board as a whole makes decisions. The Don’ts: don’t publicly criticize staff members, violate the chain of command, take private which may compromise the Board, be swayed by special interests, or partisan politics, discuss confidential matters with anyone but the Board, undermine a decision made by a majority of the Board even if you disagree.

The Meeting was adjourned at 8:07 p.m. Board Members Jay Martinez and Anton Massopust were absent.
