PERTH AMBOY, N.J. – Cathedral International celebrates 114 Years of ministry in Perth Amboy, Sunday, October 7, 2018, 6:30am and 9:30am at The Cathedral, 277 Madison Ave., Perth Amboy, NJ.
Cathedral International, was known as The Second Baptist Church and was started in 1892 by 35 African Americans in the basement of the First Baptist Church in Perth Amboy, NJ. In 1904, the founding group purchased a building on Gordon Street and in 1957, they purchased a red-brick church at 101 Broad Street. In 1990, the former Majestic Theater, at 277 Madison Ave., was purchased and renovated in 1992 where services are held today.
13 pastors have navigated the course of this Christian house of worship. Bishop Donald Hilliard, Jr., became the pastor, October 1983. Under his visionary leadership, unprecedented growth occurred in this multigenerational, multicultural church which now serves the communities of Perth Amboy, Asbury Park and Plainfield.
November 9-11, Bishop Hilliard celebrates 35 years of pastoring the church.
“Serving the needs of the congregation and the community was the focus of this great church in its inception,” said Bishop Hilliard. “114 years later with needs and challenges being much greater, we forge forward with the help of Almighty God, to continue that same focus of serving people.”
Rev. Dr. William D. Watley from St. Phillips AME Church, Atlanta Ga. is the guest speaker for the 114th church anniversary celebration. Everyone is invited to the services.
