Editorial: Local Perspective

For all the politicians who are running to the border to champion the causes of people coming from other countries to come into the United States illegally. How many homeless citizens  are you stepping over on your way there?

When immigrants arrived at Ellis Island legally, they had to show their papers. They had to leave their luggage on the ground floor and go upstairs to  be inspected by doctors. They had letters attached to their clothing which indicated any medical conditions. Sick children 12 years old or older were sent back home by themselves. Younger children were sent back with one parent. see http://www.ellisisland.se/english/ellisisland_history1.asp

I’m going to repeat what I said in a previous editorial. I remember when I went to New York City and you would always see the homeless people and those begging for money on the money on the West Side of Town. What a shocker it was when you saw homeless people sleeping on the East Side of the City. Now, it seems like the homeless are prevalent in many of the upper echelon areas in all parts of the Country.

There are approximately 554,000 people experiencing homelessness in the United States, according to a 2017 report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2017. There were 40,056 homeless veterans living in the U.S. in a single night in January 2017. see https://www.metro.us/news/homeless-veterans-in-united-states-map

As you say, a picture is worth a thousand words. C.M. & K.M.
