Must-Know New Year News from the Sadie Pope Dowdell Library!

Press Release 12/10/18

SOUTH AMBOY — New Year, New You? Not entirely! The Sadie Pope Dowdell Library is putting clichés aside as it announces its plans for the first month of 2019. Join them as they celebrate exciting first-time programs and welcome back old favorites. As we all already know, there’s something for everybody at your local library!

Tax season is once again upon us, and the library is happy to offer its services to those who welcome a hand while preparing their returns. Individuals earning less than $64,000 annually are eligible to sign up for the free VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program starting in January. Contact the library for additional information about this valuable service!

Need help troubleshooting or learning to use your computer, phone, tablet, e-reader, or other device? Stop by the library! Our ongoing Digital Café program offers tech assistance three times weekly: Mondays and Wednesdays from 12pm to 2pm, and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8pm.

Parents, grandparents, and caregivers: give yourself the gift of some much-needed R&R by bringing your little ones to the Dowdell’s thrice-weekly toddler programs! Every Monday from 1pm to 2pm, join us for Toddler Magnet Fun, where your young ward can build with colorful magnetic shapes while listening to infant-friendly music. Swing by on Wednesdays between 1pm and 2pm for Toddler Stay & Play, where kids participate in a different creative activity every week. Finally, each Friday, join the party at a Move ‘N’ Groove Toddler Playdate, where neighbors meet, stories are shared, and everybody has a chance to boogie down!

The Dowdell is encouraging young people to make self-care a priority in the new year. Encourage your child or teen to join the make-it-yourself merriment in Sadie’s Studio, where they’ll have the chance to create lip gloss (January 3), sugar scrubs (January 24), and bath bombs (January 31) from scratch. All MIY self-care programs will run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

On January 21 from 2pm to 4pm, the Dowdell will host its first-ever Escape Room Challenge! Participants will put their wits to the ultimate test in groups of up to ten collaborators, working their way through a devilish sequence of clues, riddles, puzzles, and scavenger hunt-style obstacles to find their way out of Sadie’s Studio. Registration is preferred but not required; as such, the library encourages you to reserve your spot today. Be sure you don’t miss out on this inaugural event!

Are you Fortnite-obsessed? Experience the world’s favorite online game in a whole new way at your local library! On January 14 and January 28 from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, the Dowdell is hosting a two-part live-action Fortnite experience. Build your character on the 14th, then duke it out with other contenders during the 28th’s Battle Royale. Kids of all ages are welcome!

Curious what else is going on at your local library? (We can never fit everything here!) Stop by in-person or visit our website to view adult and children’s activity calendars, which are updated on a monthly basis.
