PERTH AMBOY – Edward Mullen started as a volunteer firefighter with the Perth Amboy Fire Department in September of 2002. He also worked as a fulltime EMT with Perth Amboy Emergency Medical Services since November of 2002, until he was appointed as a career firefighter on September 14, 2004. On June 11, 2010, he was promoted to Lieutenant, on October 7, 2011 promoted to Captain, and October 15, 2013, he was promoted to the position of Battalion Chief, assigned as the administrative battalion chief, overseeing the operations of the department. Ed served as Acting Fire Chief since June 18, 2017.
Ed is a graduate of New Jersey City University’s Fire Science Program, where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science. He is certified by the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety as a Level III Incident Manager, Fire officer, Level I Fire Instructor, Fire Inspector, Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials On-Scene Incident Commander. He is certified and an Emergency Medical Technician. He holds numerous certifications in motor vehicle extrication, confined space rescue, high angle rescue, hazmat operations, trench & building collapse rescue, water & ice rescue and marine fire operations. He was the recipient of an IAFF Valor Award in 2005 for rescuing a victim with a ground ladder from a house fire on Madison Avenue and a St. Barnabas Valor Award in 2010 for assisting in the rescue of an unconscious victim from a car accident, turned into a fully involved vehicle fire. He also has successfully written several Port Security, Assistance to Firefighters and Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response Grants, which has awarded the City nearly $2.3 million dollars in the past 5 years. Ed resides in Iselin with his wife Ashley, their son Eddie and daughter Madelyn.
Chief Mullen’s great-grandfather Edward J. Mullen Sr., served the Perth Amboy Fire Department with 50 years of service and as Fire Chief in 1953. His Grandfather, Edward J. Mullen Jr. served the Perth Amboy Police Department with 40 years of serves and as the Police Chief. His Father, Edward R. Mullen served with the McClellan Engine Company 3 of the Perth Amboy Fire Department in the 1970’s and is currently and Ex-Chief of the Iselin Volunteer Fire Company with over 40 years of service. Chief Mullen is a fourth generation Perth Amboy public servant.
