PERTH AMBOY – Mayor Wilda Diaz and the Department of Human Services’ Office on Aging hosted its annual Black History Month Celebration to honor the recipients of the Thomas Mundy Peterson Inspirational Award on Wednesday, February 20th at 10:30 a.m.
Thomas Mundy Peterson was the first African-American to vote in the United States after the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment. Peterson cast his vote in a local Perth Amboy election over the question of the revision of the town’s charter.
“Thomas Mundy Peterson’s vote marked the beginning of a political, social, and cultural shift in the United States of America. Perth Amboy plays such a significant part in American history and we are proud to memorialize this during Black History Month. It is so important to commemorate our history and honor those of our present time who have made great contributions to our City. Perth Amboy would not be the same without them,” said Mayor Wilda Diaz.
Mayor Diaz will be joining by city officials, members of the community and the award recipients being honored for their accomplishments and contributions to the Perth Amboy community:
• Yvette Carter, Assistant, Office on Aging
