THE COMMUNITY VOICE: Letters to the Editor

Loud Music

As I sit at my desk listening to the music coming off the street, I feel I have to add my two cents to the discussion about loud music in Perth Amboy. The other night a parked car three houses down played music so loud that my windows shook. It brought back a conversation I had this past spring. I was in Scotch Plains with a friend of mine from Perth Amboy. It was noon and we were getting some air after lunch.  My friend remarked that even though we were a block from the business district, it was so quiet.  No music. I asked one of the residents of Scotch Plains I was with if it was so quiet because the police were tough on noise. He said no. People here don’t do that (playing music in their cars so loud others can hear it). To all my fellow sufferers, I can only say we live in a city, small but a city none the less.  Perth Amboy has all the problems of a big city: noise, traffic, overcrowding, etc. without any of the benefits of a larger city. We cannot change it. So, it’s either off to Scotch Plains or do what I do – ear plugs on the nightstand.

Who’s to Blame?

As we all know by now, there was a large sinkhole on Gordon Street. What a wakeup call for the Mayor! But we have to understand that Perth Amboy is over 300 years old and falling apart. We have old water pipes, sewage, and storm drainpipes. Will there be more sinkholes? Sinkholes are very hard to predict in some areas. Also, many heavy trucks that are over 50,000 pounds can cause old roads to cave in. Now, who’s to blame? Perth Amboy is over 300 years old and it needs to upgrade water, sewage, and storm drains and the price tag is in the millions. Oh, by the way, this was talked about in the 1980’s and what happened after that?

The Electoral College Vote

A recent letter disputed the election of Trump saying he won because of the Electoral College vote. ALL presidents are elected by the Electoral College vote! Except when the Supreme Court interferes, as in 2000. Nearly all received a majority of the votes. A candidate who gets the most votes in a state gets all the Electoral votes, a system that shuts out third parties.

To claim Trump had the ‘worst four years in the history of our nation” shows ignorance of history and arithmetic. Do some research, don’t mistake opinions as facts.
