NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The first Central Jersey death related to the coronavirus was reported in Middlesex County Saturday, as cases there and in Union County continued to rise.
“It is with great sorrow that I report that the disease has claimed the life of one of our own – a Middlesex County resident – a female in her 90s,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement early Saturday evening. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and friends. While we grieve as a community, we must remember that this is not a time to panic, but a time to continue to be diligent in our preventative measures.
“While COVID-19 impacts our friends, family, and neighbors, we must remember that we are all still just that – friends, family, and neighbors – and at a time like this, we find solace in the strength and power of our community.”
Gov. Phil Murphy on Saturday announced an increase of 442 cases statewide, bringing the total number of cases in New Jersey to 1,327.
Middlesex remains the county with the second-highest number of cases, increasing by 40 to 116 on Saturday. Bergen County had 363 cases.
