EDITORIAL: Where are the Reports on This? Ask Those Who Live There

I have a question for those politicians who asked that their police departments be defunded – will they be willing to give up their police security? New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio along with Al Sharpton helped paint a huge Black Lives Matter mural in front of the Trump Building in New York. The irony is that DeBlasio assigned 27 police officers to guard it while residents in a predominantly black neighborhood are having an increase in crime. Apparently, DeBlasio thinks that protecting a mural is more important than protecting human lives.

I don’t know if you saw the video between Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot who had a very contentious exchange during a telephone conversation with one of the City’s Councilman. I cannot repeat some of the language she used towards him, but she started, and he came right back at her. He was very concerned because rioters were coming to his constituent’s neighborhood and causing destruction. Lightfoot was not sympathetic to what he was saying. She got a taste of her own medicine when protestors showed up at her front door.

Some people assume that a lot of residents in some of the high crime neighborhoods would be more than happy to have less police presence. It’s actually the opposite until speak to those residents. One particular woman said, “I love the police. I’m just against police brutality.”

People also stated that defunding the police would be more hurtful because the gangs will run even more rampant, and they would welcome more police presence. One resident proudly said that his young son wanted to be a police officer when he grows up and he is encouraging his son to do so.

As I have stated before, there is not one profession that is untouched by bad apples, and you cannot paint a broad picture. So, take what I have written for what it’s worth and don’t always assume you know what someone else is thinking. It’s best just to go and ask the people who will be affected by this action (defunding the police). C.M.
