In accordance with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) regulations for “Notification and Public Outreach”, the party conducting the remediation, the Duane Marine Trust (the Trust), is required to provide information relating to environmental conditions and remedial activities at the above referenced site.
Former operations conducted at the Site included dry dock operations, ship maintenance and repairs, cable and wire manufacturing, and waste treatment, storage, and disposal facility. Industrial operations stopped in 1980 due to a fire, and all buildings were either destroyed in the fire or razed afterwards.
The upland portion of the Site is currently being redeveloped into a waterfront park. Environmental impacts associated with former Site operations were initially detected in 1980 following the fire.
Currently, all soil media have been investigated and remediated in accordance with regulatory requirements. Sediment investigations within the Arthur Kill are currently being completed to determine if remediation may be warranted to mitigate potential risk to the environment.
The main chemical constituents identified in sediment include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides (i.e., 4,4’-DDE, dieldrin, heptachlor, and heptachlor epoxide,) and metals (i.e., antimony, cobalt, copper, lead, nickel, tin, and zinc). PCBs, lead, nickel, and zinc impacts extend off-site. The extent of sediment impacts within the Arthur Kill have been delineated, documented, and submitted to NJDEP in a Sediment Remedial Investigation Report dated May 6, 2020.
