I used to be skeptical of the saying “History repeats itself.” However when I think of the present international situation regarding the Middle East and compare it to the late 1930’s in Europe I am not so sure!

Seventy-five years ago when I delivered the Perth Amboy Evening News, on Elizabeth Street and lower Hall Avenue, I read the headlines. By the way at 3 cents per copy it was better than the local daily newspaper at a buck per copy. The headlines and photos on the front page showed British Prime Minister Chamberlain waving a sheet of paper and proclaiming “ Peace in our time!” This was also big news on the newsreels at the Roky Theater, fondly known as the Garlic House. A deal was reached wherein territories with predominant German populations were given to Hitler to appease his demands. A year later World War II Broke out with Hitler invading Poland. So much for appeasement!

Today President Hassan Rouhani of Iran is the modern version of Hitler! He is the wolf in sheep’s clothing. President Obama is an echo of Prime Minister Chamberlain trying to make a deal with Rouhani. And the Prime Minister of Israel is the modern Winston Churchill who had Hitler’s number from the beginning. As has Netanyahu who has the courage to speak out as did Churchill! Iran is going full blast in developing nuclear weapons. These dictators just cannot be trusted! We hope and pray that history does not repeat as in 1939! The consequences could be far worse!
