I’ll be the first one to admit that I am naive when it comes to the war fought in Vietnam. One thing I do know is that it was very controversial, unpopular and a long campaign. Whatever one’s views on this particular war, there is one thing that should never have happened. That was the treatment that the returning troops endured when they came home from this conflict.

When I say returning home, this would include those coming back in a flag draped coffin, injured (physically, mentally or both).

Unfortunately, there were some Americans who acted very ugly by spitting, cursing and throwing objects that I will not name at our troops returning from Vietnam.

A few weeks ago, I and another member of my staff attended the ceremony at the NJ Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Center in Holmdel, NJ. It was a Remembrance Day Ceremony dedicated to the retiring of one of the Huey Helicopters that was used during the Vietnam War. The ceremony was held on a beautiful, warm,  sunny, bright day.

The speeches had just the right amount of sentiment and sometimes humor. I looked around at those attending the ceremony and saw how proud these troops were and their families were just as happy to be with them on this day.

I urge all to visit this magnificent complex. Just remember as this Memorial Day approaches that war is indeed hell. It’s those who served in that hell who protected your right to express your beliefs without you losing that very freedom. There are many countries that do not tolerate criticism from their citizens. In those countries, you can be arrested, tortured and/or executed for this. You don’t have to take our word for it. It’s reported constantly in the media.

Let’s also hope that there is a fast resolution to the current scandal in some VA Hospitals where Veterans are dying while waiting months for an appointment to see a doctor.

Politicians should make this a top priority instead of some of the petty issues that they go on about.
