2/14/18 Perth Amboy Council Meeting
PERTH AMBOY – Resolutions R-66-2/18 – R-69-2/18 – dealt with the proper City Officials to execute contracts with different organizations to receive CDBG grant from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development under Title 1 of the Housing & Community Development Act of 1974 as Amended.
Organizations requesting those grants appeared at the Council Meeting to explain what they would use the money for.
Robert Durso who is on the Board of Directors of PRAHD came forward to explain the amount they requested of $66,746.10. “We purchased the property next to the PRAHD building (100 First St.). We acquired that property through a foreclosure sale. The money will be used to renovate it, so it can be purchased for a qualified low-income family. We also have a rental assistance program that is 6 years old. We’re living in very tough times.”
Councilman Irizarry questioned Durso and wanted to know if this program for residents.
Durso replied, “Yes, but other towns send applicants to Perth Amboy.”
The next person to come up to speak was CEO and Director of the Perth Amboy YMCA Steve Jobin. The Raritan Bay Area YMCA request was for $39,950.80. “This is for the capital expense for 392 Smith St. The application went in last March. We have used the Carpenter’s Union to do work. We also have donations from an electric company.”
The third organization that asked for CDBG grant was the Jewish Renaissance was for $33,079.00. Jewish Renaissance Community Development Corporation Executive Director Tommy Hudanish had sent a correspondence that because a prior commitment he could not appear in person at tonight’s meeting. He could speak by phone or appear at another regular meeting.
Because of a representative not being available from the Jewish Renaissance at the Meeting, R-67-2/18 was tabled. The consent agenda R-45 through R-66 and R-69 through R-77 was moved by Councilman Fernando Irizarry and seconded by Councilman Joel Pabon. R-68 was pulled to be voted on separately. When it came to voting separately, all voted “Yes” except for Councilman Irizarry who voted “No.”
