PERTH AMBOY – At the Proprietary House, Perth Amboy history tours were given to Shull School students. Reenactors included Kurt Epps as Royal Governor William Franklin, Anton Massopust as a British Captain, and tour organizer John Kerry Dyke as William Dunlap.

“We typically give history tours to over 600 students each & every year, ” advised Mr. Dyke. “It is important to educate our kids about their very rich hometown history.”

The Proprietary House serves as a perfect location for this education. Completed in 1764, the Proprietary House was the home of Royal Governor William Franklin.   Therein, the Governor and his famous father Benjamin Franklin argued politics in 1776. William remained loyal to the English King and was later arrested by American patriot troops.

“The young students are thrilled and so are we”, stated Mr. Epps. And Shull School Principal Rosario Casiano added, “These historians really make the past come alive!”  Dyke, Epps & Massopust have been conducting Amboy history tours for many years.  All three gentlemen are volunteers.

“Perth Amboy has a great history. These tours are educational & enjoyable!”, said Dr. Damien Medina, a Perth Amboy Public School Administrator. “We have incorporated Perth Amboy history back into our school curriculum, and these gentlemen are an important part.”

“We’ve conducted tours in City Hall, St.Peter’s Church & Graveyard, and along the waterfront. Our favorite place is the historic Proprietary House “, stated Mr. Dyke.  “And of course, our Amboy students are great. I am not sure who has the more fun, that is, the kids or us!”
