Press Release 8/18

PERTH AMBOY – A series of activities celebrating the City of Perth Amboy’s 300th anniversary kicked off at Proprietary House on August 4th, with colonial dances and powdered wigs in the royal governor’s drawing room. If you missed last Saturday’s “Colonial Dance Block Party,” there is still time to celebrate. The festivities continue through November, with a number of special events planned by Proprietary House to honor the 1718 royal charter that incorporated Perth Amboy as colonial New Jersey’s first city.

On display at the Proprietary House Museum until August 22nd is Part One of “A Tercentennial Celebration,” a three-part exhibit that takes an illustrated tour of Perth Amboy through the centuries.  From August 27th to September 15th, Part One of the special exhibit will be on display at the Perth Amboy Free Public Library.  Part Two will open at Proprietary House on Sunday, September 16th and Part Three opens on Sunday, November 4th.  Also on view through November at the Proprietary House Museum is a short video documentary that recounts the history of the royal charter.

Free horse-drawn wagon rides, organized by the City of Perth Amboy and the 1683 Society, are planned for several Sunday afternoons through November (weather permitting).  The first of the horse-drawn wagon rides is scheduled for Sunday, August 19th and will depart from the Proprietary House Museum for tours of the city’s historic waterfront district.  The horse-drawn wagon rides will run from 1 to 4 PM and will be accompanied by historical interpreters.  Additional rides are scheduled to depart from the Proprietary House Museum from 1 to 4 PM on Sunday, September 9th and on Sunday, November 11th.   Free horse-drawn wagon rides will also be on offer on Saturday, October 13th, departing from Bayview Park as part of the City’s Harvest Festival.

Proprietary House and the 1683 Society are presenting two “Coffee House” afternoons featuring musical entertainment in the museum’s atmospheric colonial brick and stone wine cellar. Admission is free, with refreshments available for purchase.  On Sunday, September 9th, from 1 to 3 PM, Central Jersey trio, “The eMKayS,” will perform an eclectic mix of great music.  On Sunday, November 11th, from 1 to 3 PM, original songs on acoustic guitar will be performed by Jersey City recording artist, Kim Boyko, and by Perth Amboy’s very own, Matt Telliho.
