PERTH AMBOY – The City of Perth Amboy is presenting back-to-back events on October 19th and 20th to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The festivities begin with Perth Amboy Business Improvement District’s (BID) Mix & Mingle networking event at the Portuguese Manor (310 Elm Street) that starts at 5:30 PM. Attendees can enjoy music by DJ Shade, take home giveaway items and sample light snacks and refreshments.

On the next day, October 20th, the Perth Amboy’s Recreation Department is presenting its 5K Think Pink, Walk Proud stroll from Second Street to Bayview Park. Check-in is at 10 AM and the walk starts at 11 AM. Registration for this event is required, and participants can sign up at https://parecreation.recdesk.com by selecting the Breast Cancer Walk.

The City, Mayor Wilda Diaz, the BID and Recreation Department are presenting these activities to focus attention on the breast cancer, patients fighting the disease and new treatments. These community-based events can help reinforce the message that local resources are available to women who are seeking information about breast wellness, self-monitoring techniques and annual screening for early detection.

“These programs are examples that show how its take a village to effectively fight breast cancer,” said Mayor Diaz. “Our goal is to keep women informed about the affordable options for breast cancer screening and wellness programs. We also want to connect women, who may be battling the disease or are in remission, and they are seeking supportive groups.”

Ms. Hutchinson said, “I’m inviting everyone to come out to the Mix and Mingle. “As a cancer survivor, I know firsthand that annual mammograms and regular self-examinations are vital to breast health. Many women, and even some men, are diagnosed with breast cancer every day. Thankfully, with all the current advances in medicine, there are effective treatments available.”

For more details about the 5K Walk, call Perth Amboy’s Recreation Department at 732-826-1690, ext. 4305. The first 100 registered walkers will receive a tee shirt and water bottle. Walkers are gathering at Second Street (near the Robert N. Wilentz School) and ending at Perth Amboy’s Bayview Park (250 Water Street).

The Mix & Mingle business networking and 5K Think Pink, Walk Proud event are sponsored by the City of Perth Amboy, Mayor Diaz, the BID, Recreation Department and Horizon Blue Shield of New Jersey.
