Movie Review: Godzilla, King of the Monsters

By: Anton Massopust III

“Long live the king!”

Growing up, I love all kinds of movies, but as a kid, the kid in me always love movies with dinosaurs or giant monsters. They’re just fun movies. That’s all I could say about them. I used to watch them on the 4:30 movie on channel 7 and I would scan the movie clock to look for some favorite ones on the back of the TV Guide. My favorite of those old Godzilla films was a movie called “Destroy All Monsters” in which Godzilla and all his friends team up against a group of evil aliens and a group bad monsters from outer space. So, I was really looking forward to Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

In this new film, we pick up right where we left off after what happened in San Francisco a couple years later. Monarch (an organization that is trying to contain and study monsters) to protect them while the rest of the world just wants to destroy them. The film picks up right where we left off after what happened in San Francisco. A couple of years later Monarch is trying to keep all the other creatures contained.

The Titans are safe for now, because they are contained. The government just wants to destroy them, especially Godzilla because we don’t know if he’s a friend or foe. Monarch has some problems. A young woman scientist has perfected a device that can enable one to communicate with monsters. She finds Morthra, (a giant caterpillar).  One eco-terrorist (bad guy) wants to bring balance to the world by controlling the Titans. In order to do this, he plans to steal the communication device and plans to wipe out mankind. He knows where Ghidorah (the three headed monster that can control storms and shoot lightening) frozen in ice. Ghidorah wakes up, but so does all the other monsters (Rodan, Morthra (who is now a giant moth) and a couple other creatures). This also attracts Godzilla.  It’s up to the rest of Monarch to stop the terrorists and keep Godzilla and the monsters safe. Godzilla confronts him and fights him, becoming wounded in Antarctica.  Ghidorah freezes all the other Titans including Rodan (a giant pterodactyl bird) and several other mutated creatures. All of this comes to a head in a confrontation in Boston.

The special effects are great. The monster fights are the best part of this. This movie is terrific and it’s well worth seeing. The people who are there to anchor the movie in order for you to relate to it in a human way are rather dull. Most of us are just going to see monsters fight and the visual effects. The classic Godzilla theme is used throughout the film. They even used the Blue Oyster Cult song, “Godzilla”. Definitely stay for the ending credits to see what’s next: King Kong versus Godzilla. If you’re a big monster you’ll love this film. Go see it.
