THE COMMUNITY VOICE: Letters to the Editor

Armalite Rifle

A daily newspaper on 6-15-19 had a long editorial by a novice reporter who claimed the Armalite Rifle can fire ten rounds per second. Hunters wouldn’t waste ammunition like that. Why print such misinformation? A reporter should check the facts before commenting on a topic they are unfamiliar with.

That reporter did not mention the use of SSRI drugs (like Prozac) and their link to mass shootings over the past decades.

Too Many Kids in Perth Amboy

I agree with the comment made by Maria Vera and published in the June 5th issue of the Amboy Guardian about there being too many kids in Perth Amboy. Couples need to find a new recreation besides procreation, perhaps parcheesi? It may not be as much fun, but it won’t burden the taxpayers any further! I’d also suggest a limit of two exemptions/deductions per household, which would give a new meaning to pay to play. More children mean more schools, more teachers, and more taxes to dole out for education and services. Seniors and folks with either no or grown progeny do not benefit from those who produce excess offspring. Those who wish to have more children should take the financial responsibility for them!

Sincerely,

Water

In the letter about TTHMs beyond the standard for drinking water in Perth Amboy, it stated, “People who drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.”

“If you have a seriously compromised immune system, infants, are pregnant, or are elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your healthcare provider about drinking this water.”

It then went on to say, “Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail).”

So, there are many people who don’t know about the contamination and the Middlesex Water Company is expecting residents to spread the word to them. That is negligent of the company. They should be the ones distributing copies of the notice to apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses, paid for by them, not the taxpayers. Mayor Diaz and the City should coordinate the effort. It should be posted in English and Spanish on Channel 47. Notices could be sent to churches and other places of worship in town and published in local newspapers. I told a friend who lives in an apartment and she did not know about the contamination, but many do not have friends who could inform them about it.

Infants, the pregnant, the elderly and those with severely compromised immune systems are our most vulnerable citizens and should not be left in the dark about the water.

People in nursing homes are mostly elderly and would not be able to be proactive about their health, unless the nursing home administrations are aware of the problem and give them bottled water or their family members are informed.

It is immoral not to inform the vulnerable about health risks. And down the line, should they become ill and later find out that Middlesex Water Company and the City did not take appropriate measures to inform them, there could be lawsuits against the company and the Mayor and the City for not reaching out to them.

Surely, it is in the best interests of all our elected officials to safeguard the health of all of our residents. I urge Mayor Diaz, the administration and the City Council to work together on this issue to protect the health of everyone, especially the most vulnerable.

The Quality of Life in

Perth Amboy

After long winter months, and anxiously waiting for spring/summer to finally arrive, and waiting for the opportunity to be able open my windows to  let the summer air come in to my house,  one would think, something as simple as that it shouldn’t be an issued.  Unfortunately, this privilege to be able to relax in my own home is no longer possible for me in this city.

If it’s not my neighbor on my left blasting their music, it’s their sons and friends smoking “hookah pipes”; or the neighbor on the right blasting their music as well. Even the properties located on state street, their backyard faces my backyard, blast their music so loud that I could hear it from my own living room. This goes on almost every Friday staring early evening till 10:00 p.m. or later; and back up again on Mid-Saturday and Sunday morning till late at night.

If i choose to watch TV, I would have to close the windows so I would be able to hear my own television or to prevent the “hookah smoke” to come into my house.

Yes, I have asked my neighbors to lower their music nicely, some days they would do it other days it has caused and argument. I also have called the police many times; they come and give them warnings, the next weekend same thing. I believe a warning should be issued once. If other times the police are called for the same scenario, a fine should be issued. How many warnings are they are going to give?

Only when fines start being enforced as per the cities’ “NOISE ORDINANCE”, only then, is when people would think twice before blasting their music.

I also enjoy listening to music when I am entertaining guests in my backyard for a BBQ, but I put the music at a level that would not disturb my neighbors. I can’t even have a BBQ anymore; because my neighbors’ music is so loud that it overshadows any conversation that I may have with my guests.

Since I am no longer able to enjoy my own home, I am strongly considering moving out of Perth Amboy. Thinking of this decision saddens me. I have lived in this city for more than 40 years.  My house has been in my family for almost three decades. It has sentimental value for me.

I wish that this letter would touch some higher official and something would be done about this problem.

Sincerely,

Maritza Hernandez
