Duck the Dog Days Down at the Dowdell!

Press Release 7/15/19

SOUTH AMBOY — As the days grow longer and summer vacation dwindles ever shorter, the Dowdell Library remains busy as ever. You know the drill: books, events, technology, climate control, all of it free, all of it fun! Here’s what’s happening in August!

Let’s start at the finish line: don’t miss the Dowdell’s End of Summer Party, running from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Monday, August 26! Wave goodbye to the season with prizes, refreshments, and live music from The Paul Nagy Project!

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming… On Maker Mondays, young visitors will have the opportunity to explore a number of novel technologies including the Finch Robot, Raspberry Pi Retro Gaming Emulator, Makey Makey, and more! Crafty Tuesdays will feature analog make-it-yourself activities; projects include MIY Telescopes, MIY Space Slime, MIY Jelly Bean Buildings, and MIY Pom Pom Roller Coasters. On Wednesdays, Sadie’s Studio in 3-D pairs Toddler STEAM Tales, a tech-themed storytime, and 3-D Printer Magic, a program blending expensive machines and cheap plastic. Both events run from 1pm to 2pm every week.

You don’t want to miss Out of This Universe Thursdays, which offer another dose of Toddler STEAM Tales alongside unique events like a Cosplay Contest, Universe Party, and Rubik’s Cube Challenge! Finally, Fridays are Club Days! Options include Anime Club, Art Club, Board Game Club, and Videogaming Club. Meetings are planned for every Friday and will run on a drop-in basis from 1pm to 4pm. No registration is required; please contact the library for additional information.

The Dowdell is also offering a unique set of separate events for its teen and tween patrons. T(w)een Books and Bites, the Dowdell’s bring-your-own-read book club, will meet on Monday, August 12 from 2:30pm to 4pm. Raspberry Pi Retro Gaming sessions are scheduled for Monday, August 5 and Monday, August 19 from 2:30pm to 4pm. Screenslayers, a new movie hate-watching club, runs from 2:30pm to 4:30pm on Tuesdays including August 6 and 27. Two Animation Workshops are penciled in for Tuesday, August 13 and Tuesday, August 20 from 3pm to 4:30pm. Each Wednesday, t(w)een patrons will have the opportunity to design and print their own 3-D objects during 3-D Printer Magic with Tinkercad, running from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Major Thursday offerings include Board Game Bonanza and Rubik’s Cube Challenge on August 1 from 1pm to 4pm; MIY Sundaes from 3pm to 4pm on August 8; a Universe Party from 2pm to 4pm on August 15; a Cosplay Contest from 2pm to 4pm on August 22; and a Fan Filking Event from 2pm to 4pm on August 29.

And what about adults? No worries—the Dowdell’s got plenty planned! Looking to expand your mind? Learn to make a Noodle Veggie Salad on Tuesday, August 13 and Tuesday, August 20 from 12pm to 1pm. Finally, make a little music at P.L.A.Y. After Dark, running from 6:30pm to 8pm on Monday, August 19. Bring your own instrument (whatever it may be) and jam along with your community! Curious what else is going on at your local library?
