PERTH AMBOY – At 13:46 (1:46 p.m.) on 7/27/219, the Department was dispatched to 217 Washington Street for a reported building fire. Fire units quickly arrived and were met with heavy fire conditions engulfing the rear of the structure, also spreading to the neighboring house. Multiple master streams and hose lines were put into operation to contain and extinguish the fire over the course of several hours. All occupants were able to safely evacuate prior to our arrival. Responding units were E-1, E-2, E-4, T-2, C-1, C-2, C-5, C-8 & C-9. The fire escalated to 4 alarms calling in mutual aid from Keasbey, Melrose, Morgan, South Amboy, Iselin, New Market, East Brunswick, North Brunswick & Plainsboro to assist on scene along with the Middlesex County Fire Marshal’s Office. Edison and Monroe covered the City for the duration of the incident. The fire ultimately displaced 28 people from 211-213 & 217 Washington St. They were assisted by the City’s relocation officers and the Red Cross. The fire is currently under investigation by the PAFD & MCFM.
