SOUTH AMBOY – Different items regarding traffic safety were discussed briefly at South Amboy’s last council meeting of 2019.
Councilman Tom Reilly added alley ways to the meeting’s discussion portion of the agenda, proposing that all alley ways have a speed limit of 5 mph and signs be posted. The council also discussed the addition of stop signs at the end of alley ways to prevent accidents in the future.
City Attorney Francis Womack said that the council would have to introduce an ordinance.
Councilman Reilly also discussed the launch of the “Slow Down in Our Town” program on Raritan Avenue in South Amboy. South Amboy and Milltown launched the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety’s pedestrian safety campaign this year, which provides residents with warning messages on lawn signs and recycling bins to urge drivers to slow down in their neighborhood.
The city council pulled Ordinance #26-2019 from the agenda prior to second reading. Ordinance 26 would introduce a $50 – $60 fee for non-residential senior citizens to use the South Amboy Senior Citizen.
The city unanimously approved Ordinance #29-2019, which approves the appropriation of $200,000 from the capital improvement fund to knock down the structure at 131 South Broadway. The city has already engaged in pre-demolition meetings with New Jersey Transit, and the contract bid for demolition has been posted.
A moment of silence was held at the start of the meeting for those affected in the recent Jersey City tragedy. All council members were in attendance for the meeting.
