Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz Issues New Round of Executive Orders Amid COVID-19 Pandemic 

PERTH AMBOY, N.J.– March 20, 2020—Mayor Wilda Diaz announced on Thursday effective at 8 p.m. March 19 the closing of barber shops, hair and nail salons, tattoo parlors, social clubs, and any businesses where social distancing cannot be maintained, in accordance with Governor Phil Murphy’s directive.

Essential businesses such as supermarkets, pharmacies, bodegas, banks, gas stations, and laundromats can remain open, as will check cashing locations. Restaurants are open for takeout only. The City of Perth Amboy Public Library is closed until further notice.

The mayor made this announcement as three more cases of the Coronavirus were reported in Perth Amboy, bringing the total to four. Updated information is shared on the city’s various digital channels. “My administration has taken these measures to safeguard our citizenry during this pandemic,” explained Mayor Diaz. “Our administration and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is committed to doing whatever is necessary to help reduce the further spread of COVID-19. We urge everyone to follow the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the NJ Department of Health (NJDOH) on what best practices for prevention.”

As previously announced, a State of Emergency for the City of Perth Amboy with a 8 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew is still in effect. Residents are recommended to stay in their homes at this time. The exception are emergencies and those reporting or returning from work.

Senior citizens are especially vulnerable to the Coronavirus. The senior center and recreation programs have been canceled, but transportation for food shopping and medical appointment is still available. Registered seniors who participate in the County’s Nutrition Site program and who are in need, are still receiving a hot meal delivered by the Office on Aging. At this time drivers are delivering to more than 23 senior homes. For residents needing more information about senior services, they should call the Perth Amboy Office on Aging at 732-826-1690 ext. 4325 or 4307.

“We thank everyone for their cooperation as we continue to take every precaution to limit the spread of the Coronavirus,” said Deputy Chief and OEM Coordinator Larry Cattano. “We ask every resident to be diligent and to follow the recommended guidelines from the CDC. Together, we will all get through this crisis.”
