HACKENSACK – In remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country, Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center held a Memorial Day ceremony to honor all fallen servicemen and women, including team members who are also military heroes.
The solemn event, held at 1:00pm, in front of the hospital’s main entrance and flagpole, was conducted in military fashion by uniformed members of the Hackensack Meridian Military Honor Guard and Veteran’s Network.
During the service, a flag folding ceremony was held with a United States flag, which was presented to a representative from the Cardiac team, in recognition of a recently fallen comrade, a U.S. Army veteran, whose family was in attendance.
““The service members we honored today, came from all walks of life, but they shared several fundamental qualities – courage, pride, determination, selflessness, dedication to duty and integrity – all the qualities needed to serve a cause larger than one’s self,” said Mark Sparta, FACHE, president, Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center. “They were called to be part of something bigger than themselves. They were ordinary people who responded in extraordinary ways and rose to the nation’s call because they wanted to protect a nation which has given them – and all of us – so much.”
Additionally, Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center displayed a Missing Man Table in the main hospital lobby, where tribute items were placed in honor of fallen, missing or imprisoned military service members.
“On this most solemn of days, the Veteran’s network and Hackensack University Medical Center are being presented with items that honor our fallen warriors,” said Daniel Dulude, United States Air Force. “The items that are being presented and displayed here each contain a story of bravery in the face of terror, steadfastness to complete the mission and the loss of our staunchest protectors.”
