09/23/2024, MIDDLESEX COUNTY – Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Lawrence Cattano of Perth Amboy Police Department announced today that on Friday, September 20, 2024, a Perth Amboy man was charged in connection with the fatal crash that occurred on August 23, 2024, in the City of Perth Amboy.
On August 23, 2024, at approximately 5:55 P.M., authorities received a 911 call reporting a serious crash in the area of Kamm Road and Convery Boulevard involving a motorcycle and two passenger vehicles. Upon their arrival, authorities located the motorcyclist, Michael Fernandez, 25, of Perth Amboy, lying in the roadway with serious injuries. Fernandez was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
An investigation led by Detective Kyle Savoia of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Detective Matthew Colonna of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the motorcycle operated by Fernandez was attempting to turn onto Convery Boulevard when it was struck by a sedan driven by Jorge Lopez, 61, of Perth Amboy. The sedan that was driven by Lopez struck the motorcycle and then another sedan. The driver of the second sedan sustained minor injuries.
Jorge Lopez, 61, of Perth Amboy, turned himself into Perth Amboy Police Department on Friday, September 20, 2024, and was subsequently charged with one count of second-degree Vehicular Homicide, Driving While Intoxicated, and other motor vehicle offenses.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Lopez are merely accusations and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
