June 22- 25 — Sisters Under Sail!

Unicorn with wooden masts sailing Lake Huron 1993.

Adventure of a Lifetime Comes to Perth Amboy—

PERTH AMBOY – The tall ship, Unicorn, will visit the Harborside Marina in the City of Perth Amboy, Friday, June 22 through Monday, June 25. The Unicorn, a classic schooner, is a sail training vessel that sponsors a leadership development program, “Sisters Under Sail,” for teenage girls. Program participants build self-reliance, self-esteem, self-respect, and respect for each other and community through their on board, sail training experience. The mission of the Sisters Under Sail program is to build confidence, enhance self-esteem, develop social conscience and teach the value of sisters working toward a common goal.

The Unicorn will dock at the Harborside Marina and be open to the public for tours on Saturday afternoon, June 23, and Sunday afternoon, June 24. The ship will not be open the day of arrival, June 22, and the day of departure, June 25. Perth Amboy Mayor, Wilda Diaz, encourages all to enjoy the many waterfront activities that will occur throughout the weekend for all to enjoy the Unicorn visit to Perth Amboy. On Saturday evening, June 23, an invitation only, Sponsors Reception will take place on the deck of the Unicorn. Anyone interested in attending should contact: for more information.

Six Perth Amboy teenage girls are selected to take part in the Sisters Under Sail program based on their strong interest and passion to participate. This educational opportunity is made available thanks to the collaboration of the City of Perth Amboy Department of Recreation, the Perth Amboy Board of Education, the Perth Amboy Port Authority, the Sailing Program at the Perth Amboy High School, generous sponsors, and many volunteers. The Unicorn will depart Perth Amboy on the morning of June 25 and sail through Long Island Sound to New London, Connecticut. During the weeklong voyage, participants will take part in an onboard, educational experience that includes climbing the rigging, working as a team, learning knot tying, cooking on board, handling the lines of the ship, cleaning, steering the Unicorn and thoroughly enjoying an “adventure of a life time.” The Sisters Under Sail adventure affords participants an opportunity to work as a team and offer leadership for one common purpose.

Although the sailing voyage for the selected participants is free, the cost of the voyage is privately funded through public, business, and corporate support under the 501(c) (3) organization, Celebrate Perth Amboy/Sisters Under Sail.
