Animal Shelter Temporarily Closed

PERTH AMBOY — The shelter was notified that one of the sheltered dogs that had been taken to an Animal Hospital had contracted Parvovirus. Parvo, or CPV as it is more commonly known, is a highly contagious viral disease that is one of the most common causes of diarrhea in dogs and is now one of the most common serious dog disease problems encountered in animal shelters.

Dr. Faith Perrin, the shelter’s veterinarian, has instructed that the shelter be closed for two weeks so that animal control personnel can clean and disinfect the shelter property. The doctor will also start a vaccination protocol for the other dogs at the shelter starting next week.

The shelter will remain closed and no animals will be accepted until the cleaning process is completed. It is important to note that this virus is only harmful to dogs and not humans.
