PERTH AMBOY – Perth Amboy High School was one of 10 participants in the Sixth Annual Kid Tech Day. The New Jersey Department of Education hosts the event to give students a chance to show how their innovative activities and projects use technology to support and enhance learning.
On April 18, 2012, students, Cheri Crespo, Cesarina Garcia, Kiana Inoa, Julissa Miranda, Priscilla Valenzuela, and Zyania Zavala and teachers Rebecca McLelland-Crawley and Jaime Fazzina staff tables at Department of Education headquarters in Trenton and responded to questions from invited guests and members of the public.
Students’ projects included blogging, vlogging, tweeting, skyping and podcasting to identify the water quality of the Raritan Bay and its effects on the environment (ultimately drinking water). They interacted with members of the community to teach fishermen at the local piers about the dangers of eating Blue Claw Crabs. They created video podcasts on their research and posted it on the class website and ITunes U. Prior to implementation of the program, no student received three or greater on the AP exam. Since implementation, 30-40% of all participants received three or higher on the AP exam.
The Department of Education launched Kid Tech Day in 2006 to recognize the important role that technology plays in 21st century learning. Since its inception, more than 345 students from 82 schools have participated in Kid Tech Day.
