PERTH AMBOY – Mayor Wilda Diaz and the Raritan Bay Anglers Club announce the 29th Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby and Casting Contest to be held on Saturday, September 6, at the Harborside Marina on Front Street.
The City of Perth Amboy will co-host the derby with the Raritan Bay Anglers Club. Members of the Anglers Club will assist and instruct the participants. Each age group event will last one hour. Prizes will be given out for the largest, smallest, most and unusual fish caught.
There will be four competitive groups according to age: 5 and under, 6-8, 9-12 and 13-16. A casting contest will also be held at the marina parking lot. In order for any fish to qualify it must meet the size and limit requirements established by NJ Department of Environmental Protection.
Traditional fish caught include: snappers, porgies, spots and fluke. On occasion, needlefish and members of the jack family have also been caught.
Participants are advised to bring their own fishing poles and reels. Some spearing bait will be provided. Bait can be purchased at a shop near the marina.
This event is free and open to the public. Both resident and non-residents up to the age of 16 are invited to participate.
