WOODBRIDGE — Middlesex County Republican Chairman Samuel Thompson today announced the addition of Jesus Varela of Perth Amboy to the 19th Legislative District Assembly race. Varela joins the ticket following after Reyes Ortega notified the Division of Elections he was withdrawing his candidacy.

“The Republican county committee members for the 19th Legislative District met on Saturday morning and unanimously selected Jesus Varela to fill the vacancy,” said Thompson.

Varela joins Tom Maras of Woodbridge in the campaign for General Assembly.

“Democrats have been in control of the legislature for over 13 years. It’s time for a new direction,” said Varela. “In the Assembly I will work hard to lower taxes for the middle class and make New Jersey more affordable. My life and work experience will help make a difference in our communities. It is a honor to run with Tom Maras and county candidates Alex Barletta, Jose Alonzo, and Sharon Hubberman, individuals who care about our towns. I know that together we will find solutions to rising property taxes and lack of jobs. I am hoping to win the support of the people for my candidacy to the Assembly seat in the 19th legislative district.”

“Jesus Varela has always been a very hard worker and is a person who has been a good advocate for our community. He is the type of person who will champion a cause which will help the working class,” said Sharon Hubberman. “In a race for Assembly in the 19th District, Jesus Varela and Tom Maras may seem like David battling Goliath, but when you have the candidates who are for the people, are approachable and dedicated to bringing progress to our towns, a victory in November for our candidates will mean a brighter future for our district.”

Varela is a small business owner who lives in Perth Amboy.
