Statement by Mayor Wilda Diaz Read at 9/11 Ceremony

PERTH AMBOY – Police, Fire and EMS Personnel, Council President and Council Members, clergy, city officials, family and friends.

I first want to thank my office, city departments and community partners for making this event possible.

Today, we hold the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in honor of thousands of people tragically lost on this very day and also in memory of our two own community members– Isaias Rivera and Officer Richard Rodriguez.  It is an honor for us to recognize their legacy every year since the day this monument was erected.

Today, I look back and cannot believe that it has been 15 years!!!

I was shocked when I was faced with the reality that Freshmen starting high school this year will be learning about 9/11 as a historical event that took place before they were born.  While, I remember it as though it took place yesterday.

And so, it is up to us to remember the value, the truth and the foundation of this great country. It’s established law and founding principles stand as the moral compass, that has molded the lives of millions of Americans and other countries that gaze upon us, longing for freedom and democracy.

Far too many times, we get caught up in our personal lives or we get carried away with certain distractions and we forget the importance and the value of our fellow neighbors.

This country of strength, integrity and honor was not created by the judgement of one man, nor will it ever succeed if we are divided. Our success lies in OUR unity and a common vision.

We will only triumph if we continue as ONE NATION!! UNDER GOD!!! UNITED!!!

Today, we commemorate and celebrate the bravery that we saw from our firefighters, our police officers, EMTs, civilians and especially our honorary heroes!

Perth Amboy made a positive impact on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, and we have not stopped!

I believe that the families that are raised right here are respectful, loyal, caring, proud and especially resilient.

That day reminded us of the worth of our freedom in this country and the importance of valuing our loved ones.  And that prayer is not just poetry or a cry for help, but a conversation of faith and hope.

The sacrifices made by all demonstrated the determination of our city and our nation.

This memorial service is nothing short of recognizing everyone, from those who stood strong with encouragement, to the very people that defended and paid the ultimate price for our safety—including two members of the Perth Amboy community and their loved ones.

May our nation’s history never be forgotten—that of centuries ago, and especially that of 15 years ago.

My prayer for us is that God would be placed first in the hearts of the people, that we love our fellow neighbor, as ourselves and that God continues to bless you, your families and the United States of America!
