EDITORIAL: Open Mouth, Insert Foot (Sometimes)

Saying things that shouldn’t be said (especially in public) has been all over the news. I don’t know one person who hasn’t put their foot in their mouth at least once in their lifetime. Many individuals have been stupid enough to record and post these comments on social media. Today, especially with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. anything you say, write, like, follow, and post, etc. is under scrutiny. This goes from anything such as of pictures of your kid’s birthday party, down to political statements posted on the internet.

One should never, ever, ever post anything on social media that you don’t want your mother or grandmother to read. If you think something might be offensive, then don’t post it. In today’s world, you can easily be scrutinized for an off-color comment, a stupid joke, or saying something just plain stupid. Many potential employers look at perspective job applicant’s social media pages (or at least their internet presence) to see if there’s anything they view as reflecting poorly on the applicant. This can include anything from references to heavy drinking, drug use, extreme violence, sexually explicit material, etc.

Many celebrities have damaged their careers for making stupid comments and/or stupid social media posts. Comedian Kathy Griffin posted herself holding a beheaded Donald Trump on social media.

I have a few words about the Kathy Griffin situation. She said while recording the video that she knew it would probably get her in trouble, then she went on her apology tour, then she hired attorney Gloria Allred to say that she was being bullied by Trump and she withdrew her apology. Yes, some of Griffin’s shows and appearances were cancelled, but the woman’s net worth is $14 million, so she doesn’t have to worry about working another day in her life. Here’s the real kicker – she made a comeback and is working regularly, again. So, in her situation, it came out to be a boost to her career.

There were a lot of celebrities who fell from grace and came back.

Recently, Roseanne Barr’s reboot of “Roseanne” was taken off the air because of off-color comments that Roseanne Barr made on social media. This is not the first time Roseanne Barr did something vulgar in public. Barr made obscene gestures while singing an off-key national anthem at a San Diego Padres Game back in 1990. At the time, her show was not cancelled because of her behavior.

Donald Trump has made more than his share of remarks that should not have been said or tweeted.

There are people of all races, creeds, and color who have offended others in their own race calling them offensive words. Many times, they get away with it. Sometimes they don’t. It depends on who you are.

There are certain celebrities who have millions of followers just because of always making off color statements. There are people who will follow just about anything nowadays. Everybody has a nitch.

However, for the average person, it’s hit or miss. Social media posts can cost you your job, your reputation, and who knows what else. The internet is creating a public database of information that anyone can access. If you ever Google yourself, you’d be surprised how much someone can find out about you.

If I learned anything over the past 7+ years, is anything you say out loud can never be unsaid. Anything you write (especially publish) can never be unwritten.  REMEMBER, THE MOTHERBOARD KEEPS EVERYTHING!! K.M. & C.M.
