Press Release

SOUTH AMBOY — Autumn is a season of returns: students go back to school, leaves flutter to earth, and South Amboy citizens flock to the Sadie Pope Dowdell Public Library. From aspiring entrepreneurs and photographers to creatively costumed kids and, of course, avid readers, the Dowdell has something for everybody!

Swing by on Monday, October 1, at 10am for our New Jersey Sales and Online Business Workshop. Presented by the New Jersey Division of Taxation in tandem with the State Library, this free 100-minute seminar provides local business owners and entrepreneurs with a comprehensive overview of the Garden State’s sales tax laws and practices. Topics covered include taxable products and services; sales tax inside and outside New Jersey; protocol for shipping products; methods for collecting New Jersey sales tax; and tutorials on filing sales and use tax returns. Registration is required—contact the library to reserve a seat!

Teen Read Week runs October 9 through October 15, and patrons ages 13 through 19 are encouraged to enter the Dowdell’s annual Ruined Book Contest! Simply take a book title—say, The Hunger Games—and add a word to “ruin” it—say, The Hunger Games Diet. At the end of the contest period, the library’s elementary and middle school students will vote for their favorite, and the winner will take home a spectacular prize! One entry per patron per day

Cook up something new scrumptious at the library’s bimonthly Culinary Workshops! Bring in your kids on October 18 or 25 between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm and watch them make their very own chocolate spider doughnuts. It’s sure to be an arachnid good time!

Halloween only comes once a year, but your friends at the Dowdell are celebrating twice! First, get into spooktacular spirits at our Annual Halloween Costume Party. This year’s event, which runs from 3:45 pm to 5 pm on October 22, will also feature a special Celebrity Storytime with South Amboy City Councilman Mickey Gross! Just one week later, on October 31, steer clear of goblins and ghouls (and food allergies!) by trick-or-treating at your local library!

We encourage all local shutterbugs to enter the library’s ongoing Local Business Photo Contest, which is accepting entries through November 15. Amateur photographers are encouraged to submit up to five high-resolution digital images featuring a clearly identifiable South Amboy business via email to comments@dowdell.com. (Be sure to specify the location of your photo, the date it was taken, and your name and contact information in your message.) Awards for Best Photograph, Runner-Up, and Best Architectural Photograph will be announced at the library’s Holiday Open House on Monday, December 3 at 7:30pm.

Comments, queries, compliments, concerns? Please visit www.dowdell.org, or contact the Library at 732-721-6060 or comments@dowdell.org. The library is located off John O’Leary Blvd, adjacent to South Amboy Middle High School.
