Movie Review: Aquaman

By: Anton Massopust III

“My father was a Lighthouse Keeper; my mother was a Queen of Atlantis. They were never supposed to meet, and I was never supposed to be born. I’m the bridge between the two worlds – a son of the land. and the king of the sea. I am Aquaman!”

Jason Momoa plays the King of the Sea in “Aquaman.” In “Justice League,” Aquaman helps the defeat Steppenwolf and defends the Earth against DarkSeid and his minions. Our underwater hero has some new problems to deal with now. He just really just wants to be left alone in peace and take care of his father. He does what he can to help the surface world, but when a beautiful young girl who is the princess of another kingdom named Mera (Amber Heard) comes to find Aquaman. She asks him to defeat the Ocean Master, the second Prince of Atlantis who is the true heir to the throne, but he wants to bring all the forces to the ocean to bear. He wants to conquer the human world as well as ocean world. He takes all he pollution in the ocean and dumps it on the shore. Aquaman challenges him for the throne and is defeated, but Mera saves him. They both go away from Atlantis on a quest to recover the King’s trident. If Aquaman wields the trident, he will have the power to unite all the kingdoms and defeat Ocean Master. They follow the clues to where the trident is located. Aquaman’s old enemy Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a fierce underwater pirate wants revenge on Aquama because Aquaman had left Manta’s father to die.

Can our heroes complete the quest and unite all the kingdoms and bring peace before a war that would ravage both worlds? Jason Momoa is probably the best part of Justice League. He’s got a very dry wit and brings new life to a character that doesn’t get much respect in the superhero community. He can fight and talk to fish. He can command the ocean. That’s not too shabby. He’s actually very funny. His origins are similar to Thor. Where does he truly belong?  With tons of great action, adventure and lots and lots of different kinds of creatures, the best part of this film is the fight between Aquaman and his old nemesis Black Manta. That’s worth a movie ticket any day of the week. My only problem with “Aquaman” is the movie is a little long. There are jump scares and no warning when huge explosions happen. There’s a little too much of that. The underwater CGI is a little strange, so it makes some of the story hard to follow. This is a fun superhero movie for anyone, even if they didn’t know anything about Aquaman. So, dive in.
