MOVIE REVIEW: Emma

By Anton Massopust III

“We learned the solution to this game: how to win it and how to lose it. Emma is perfection.”

The latest remake of the movie “Emma” is about a young woman, Emma (Anya Taylor-Joy) who is a matchmaker and a bit of a busybody. She’s too busy with other people’s affairs to notice that the man she loves is right under her nose. She first tries to get her young best friend hooked up with a minister but fails miserably because he is infatuated with Emma.

Emma is soon undone. She has to learn a lesson about herself and trying to help others and to pay attention to what’s really going on around her.

“Emma” is very simple story about love, Victorian manners, simple life of reading, conversation, and matchmaking. It’s brilliantly acted with a little bit of comedy. The costumes are exquisite. Just to look at the beautiful scenery of the English countryside with wonderful cinematography is a feast for the eye.

Of Jane Austin’s books, Emma is probably the most famous. This is not the best version (I prefer the BBC version), but this is a really nice version. It’s well-acted a pleasant quiet surprise. You can stream it now On Demand. At this time of quarantine, it’s a nice, quiet surprise. “Emma” might be something you enjoy. It’s a little bit different than usual affairs escape to a simpler time.
