DVD Review: The Chosen

The Chosen

By: Anton Massopust III

There were many movies about Jesus, but none really talked about how he gathered the apostles to start his ministry. In this three-disc set, which is available on Blue-Ray, we explore the beginnings of Jesus’s ministry.

Episode 1 – “I Have Called You by Name,” we are introduced to Mary Magdalene who is possessed by a demon. The Roman soldiers ask Nikodemus (a high teacher of the Sanhedrin) tries to heal her, but the wise teacher eventually would heal her miraculously. Episode 2 – “Shabbat,” Mary Magdalene prepares her first meal and Jesus comes to attend it as he starts to gather his apostles. Episode 3 – “Jesus Loves the Little Children,” little children find a stranger in the forest (Jesus) who teaches them about the coming messiah (which is him). Episode 4 – “The Rock of Which I it is Built,” throughout the series, we find out that fisherman Peter owes a great deal of money to the Romans and he has to pay his taxes or lose his livelihood. We area also introduced to tax collector Matthew and his Roman bodyguard. We also see “The Miracle Catch,”. Episode 5 – “The Wedding Gift” – Jesus meets another new apostle, Thomas and the miracle at Cana of turning water into wine. Episode 6 – “Indescribable Compassion,” – Jesus heals the paraplegic and causes a disturbance among the Sanhedrin. Episode 7 – “Invitations,” – Jesus meets Nikodemus by night, and explains his philosophy. Jesus wants him to join his ministry, but he is undecided. Episode 8 – “I Am He,” Jesus goes to the well and speaks to a Samaritan Woman and continues his ministry. The bonus disc is a Christmas Special.

“The Chosen” is privately funded. The story of Jesus is portrayed in a TV Series. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of the first episode that  “The Chosen” does not directly follow the gospels.

My only complaint is it is a little slow, and it is hard to tell who is who (because of how the actors are dressed). This is a fun series to watch during the easter season. It is well acted, well written, and well produced. There is a good music backdrop and they interblend some of the teachings of the Old and New Testaments. It shows the story of Jesus under the perspective of ordinary people and brings Jesus’s ministry to life.

Buy the DVD and enjoy, “The Chosen.”
