Movie Review: Godzilla vs. Kong

By: Anton Massopust III

“We need him! The world needs Kong!”

Why do people go to the movies? I go to the movies because I like to have fun, and an old-fashioned fun monster movie is just what I the doctor ordered. Godzilla vs. Kong is a continuation from the other two films Godzilla and Godzilla King of the Monsters and Kong on Skull Island.

Godzilla seems to be attacking people for no reason and he devastates a base on the company Apex that seems to be up to something sinister. There is an artificial island with an underwater facility somewhere in the Pacific. On Skull Island King Kong has been living in peace. Apex tells them that they should go to Hollow Earth, the mythical world inside the earth that is supposedly the origin of all the Titans.

On the way, transporting Kong on an aircraft carrier to the entrance to Hollow Earth. Godzilla attacks and in the epic fight is a draw. That’s just the beginning. A young woman and a native girl who is deaf, and can communicate with King Kong through sign language is needed to convince Kong to show them the entrance to Hollow Earth. In an entrance through Antarctica, Apex had designed vehicles to transport through the portal back and forth to Hollow Earth. Inside, they find a living ecosystem and the birthplace of Kong’s people. It is a beautiful world, but this is all a trap by Apex to find the power source that runs Hollow Earth so they can steal it to power their Ultimate Weapon – Mega-Godzilla, a giant robot Godzilla that will kill the Titans and replace them.

When these two epic monsters have a legendary fight in Hong Kong, the city is evacuated, and monsters do get out. The real threat is when Mega-Godzilla arrives on the scene. The bad guys at Apex are unaware that Mega-Godzilla is becoming self-aware. He is connected to Jay Wayne, a computer scientist and the head of Ghidorah (the three headed dragon monster) from the previous film. Mega-Godzilla has his own goals.

If you ignore the people who just push the plot along, Godzilla vs. Kong is just a fun, fun movie. The monsters are what’s important to the film. The special effects are terrific, especially inside Hollow Earth, the epic world of Titans. I think this should be more explored in other films.

This is a massive fun movie that should be experienced on the big screen or at home on a giant TV. Either way go watch it. It’s a lot of fun.
